Abstract: Prof. Herijgers will elaborate on the current curriculum of Master in Medicine, Master in Biomedical Science and Master in Pharmacy: what are current focus areas? Rationale and impact of the entrance test? What are potential upcoming changes in the curriculum? What are future trends? What about Pharmaceutical Medicine in Belgium ? Recent initiative on Summer Schools? He will also give insights on Master students and PhDs at our universities: not only numbers and statistics, but also discuss questions like: do we face a PhD bubble in Belgium? What are career options for Master and PhD students? Are the right competences and skills trained for a succesful career? Is there a role for universities in life long learning (professional education)? How to familiarize (Master & PhD) students with career opportunities outside universities (eg in farma)? Internships in industry: how to ensure it is succesful? And much more? Bio: Paul Herijgers was trained as cardiac surgeon. He is a staff member of the clinical department of cardiac surgery in UZ Leuven and full professor at KU Leuven, Faculty of Medicine. After being chair of the department of cardiovascular sciences, he was elected dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 2016. The Faculty of Medicine is training more than 9000 students at present with programmes in Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry, Speech and Language Therapy, Management and Leadership in Healthcare, Nursing and Midwifery, Bioethics and Sexuality. Furthermore, the Faculty participates in interfaculty programs of Statistics, Bio-informatics, Radiation Protection and Global Health.
